THE LEEDS RED TRIANGLE FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Formed in 1920 by Edward Rickerby a" Leeds Loiner ," to provide Saturday football.
Starting with only three Clubs in 1920 the league soon grew and by 1921 had over a Hundred teams playing organised Saturday League soccer. Though its name and logo were associated with the Leeds Y.M.C.A this connection has vanished over the years, due to the demise of the Y.M.C.A."s with only Lawnswood still remaining .The Red Triangle continued to provide regular football for over 120 teams in eight Divisions, till the advert and increase in Sunday football saw the Leeds Combination Football League and teams switch from Saturdays to Sundays and the Leeds Sunday league increase its membership. This saw the Leeds Alliance (Churches), and the popular Half Holiday League both disband. A sorry time for many players.
Over the years many private grounds and facilities have also vanished, these included popular venues like East End Park W.M.C., Gibbs Sports, L.I.C.S., Richmond Sports, Rose Forgrove, Roes Sports, Wellington Sports, Whitehall Printers, Whitbreads Sports, Yorkshire Copper Works, Y.E.B. and several others, due to the decrease in local manufacturing companies. This has caused problems for all Leagues in providing suitable facilities for their annual Cup Finals, along with the increased charges by Senior Clubs.
1984 saw the Leeds and District revive their Inter-League Competition, to be won by the Red Triangle League, whose latest success was in the 1998/99 season under Rob Taylor. The Secretary of the Year in 1984 was a lady, Mrs Brenda Wilson of C.F. Sports, a fine example to current Secretaries? Though we now have lady council members, including Miss Kirsty Firth who joined us in 2003, aged 17!
Many clubs who started in the Leeds Red Triangle League progressed to a higher level, including Farsley Celtic and Yorkshire Amateurs, who have forgotten their roots. But who can forget local giants Beeston St Anthony's, Westbrook Wanderers, Farnley St Michaels, Holbeck W.M.C.,L.I.C.S., Gipton W.M.C., Young Santos, Hillside Richmond Inn, Mount St. Mary's, Neville Sports, Burton Sports, Burley United, and Pudsey Amateurs all names to conjure with.
Amongst local referees, we have seen J.J. Russell, Arthur Luty, Bob Raby, Jeff Ward, Jim McAulay, and Mick Stoddart all progress to Football League and beyond status. All fine examples to our crop of match officials.
Triangle Officials who were dedicated to the game, at Leeds and District level included Bob Bates, Jack Dockerty, Bill Hollingworth, Ken Houlden, Fred Kelly, Bernard Padley,Cliff Pagdin, Doug Pickersgill, Johnny Riggs, Ronnie Walker and Albert West, Jim Cowgill, who are all sadly missed and were a great examples to us all.
At District and County level, the League has seen many of its members become current workers, David Hodgson, Alf Hayes, Jim McAulay, Jim McMahon, Geoff Fairbourn, Jim Cowgill, Bob Raby, Ray Green, Peter Job, Peter Naylor, Alan Pagdin, Peter Palfreyman, Gerry Pawson, and Colin Taylor M.B.E. All willing helpers.
Though down to only two Divisions and 26+ teams now, the League is still providing regular Saturday football and with Chairman Rob Taylor, backed by Brian Radcliffe, Steve Firth, Chris Duffy, George Anslow and Maurice Leonard are hoping to keep local League Football going at 'Grassroots Level'. All players have to start somewhere.
Park Hotel Pudsey became the first Triangle team to win a final at the W.R.C.F.A. Ground, Fleet Lane, the Challenge Trophy in 2002/3.
Season 2003/2004 saw Harrison Beds complete the leagues first " Treble " winning the Jackson Trophies Division, the Kingfisher Challenge Cup and retaining the Pudsey Sports & Social Club Cup. Well Done!
With now regular Inter-League fixtures against Birkenhead and Wirral, Doncaster, Halifax, Selby, Spen Valley, and York, players are been encouraged to improve their standards, through the Red Triangle League.
If only parks facilities were improved, match standards may?
Providing football for all, the League in recent years has seen a welcome rise in Ethnic Clubs, with teams of West Indians, Asians, Angolans and Africans made welcome, and showing their foot balling talents.
Season 2004/2005 saw the League extend to three divisions, adding an extra Cup Competition, making five in total, we also fielded a 16/18 side on the Wirral, a move forward.
We found ourselves with two young ladies on the Council, Kirsty Firth being joined by Liz Chambers, thankfully adding charm and looks to our ageing Council Members.
Terry Brockman of Drighlington Adwalton became our oldest Inter-League player at 54, playing in the L.& D.F.A. Inter-League Competition and at the Wirral, well done, Terry.
Park F.C. did our Premier "Double" and Leeds Deaf won the EDF Plate in Aldershot after a wait of 13 years for some silverware. Well Done
And with our Inter-League and Cup Finals at Garforth Town A.F.C., and Tadcaster Albion, fine Headquarters at the Parkfield Suite in Pudsey for our All Club Meetings, with our Council Meetings at Rowland Road W.M.C. and all current Competitions sponsored, local football will only flourish if all Clubs, Officials, Players, and Referees try and work together in supporting our great game.
BRIAN RADCLIFFE. Secretary/Treasurer/Fixture Secretary 2005/2006
